What is a UPS?

Uninterruptible Power Supply

A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a crucial device that safeguards critical equipment by providing backup power during power fluctuations or failures. It acts as a protective barrier between the raw mains power and the equipment that needs to be protected.

When the electrical mains supply fails or drops to an unacceptable voltage level, a UPS system ensures uninterrupted power supply by using batteries as a backup source. These systems come in single-phase and three-phase configurations to cater to different power requirements.

Small UPS systems, designed to be plugged into a power socket, typically provide a few minutes of backup power from built-in batteries. This duration is sufficient to safely power down a computer or other sensitive equipment. For longer backup times, additional battery enclosures can be utilised.

Larger UPS systems, depending on their power rating, can have internal batteries and/or additional battery enclosures. These batteries can be housed in matching enclosures or cladded battery stands, while open battery racks are also available.

In cases where extended battery backup is required, an alternative cost-effective solution is to connect a generator to the UPS system, which can provide continuous input power.

Furthermore, UPS systems often have the capability to alert fileservers, enabling them to shut down in an orderly manner when a power outage occurs.
